Getting Help

Finding free or low-cost legal help near you

Legal aid organizations: Most states have nonprofit legal aid societies that provide free help to people below certain income thresholds. Search '[your state] legal aid' or check LawHelp.org, which lists resources by state.

Court self-help centers: Many courthouses have a self-help center or 'facilitator' who can explain procedures and review your paperwork (though they generally cannot give legal advice or represent you).

Law school clinics: Local law schools often run clinics where supervised students provide free assistance in specific practice areas.

Lawyer referral services and limited-scope help: Your state or local bar association can refer you to attorneys, including ones who offer low-cost consultations or 'unbundled' services for just one part of your case.

211: Dialing 211 (in most U.S. areas) connects you to a directory of local health and human services, including legal aid, that can point you in the right direction.
